A developmental edit focuses on plot, characters, timing, and pace in a fiction work, and it focuses on fact-checking, argument, and voice for non-fiction. The editor will leave notes in the manuscript using the Comments feature and explain how the book can be improved.

A  line edit, or copyedit, focuses on wording, grammar, sentence length, and pacing. It comes after an author is sure that their work’s plot, chapter structure, and/or argument is in place.

A proofread is a final necessary step before publishing. It ensures the book is error-free. Authors are advised to let the proofreader’s eyes be the last pair to look at a book before it goes into layout and publication.
